I provide specialist assessment and management for a wide range of immune and allergic conditions. If you are unsure whether your condition falls within my scope, please contact my rooms before booking.
Allergy | Immune deficiency | Immune-related lung disease | Autoimmune disease
Allergy
The most important part of an allergy assessment is your clinical history. Skin-prick testing or specific IgE blood tests may also be helpful.
- Food allergy
- Suspected drug allergy and adverse drug reactions
- Allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, including hay fever, allergic rhinitis, and allergic eye symptoms
- Chronic spontaneous urticaria, also known as hives, and angioedema
- Anaphylaxis assessment, management plans, and adrenaline autoinjector training
- Bee and wasp venom allergy, with venom immunotherapy (VIT) where indicated
- Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis
Suspected penicillin allergy
I assess selected suspected penicillin allergies where the previous reaction appears low risk, such as a mild or uncertain reaction that occurred many years ago. Assessment begins with a careful review of what happened. Testing or a supervised oral challenge may be appropriate in some cases. Please contact my rooms before booking if you are unsure whether your situation is suitable.
Please note
While I see many common allergic conditions, I am not currently able to assess allergy to anaesthetic medications or selected complex drug allergy presentations. If you are unsure whether your situation is suitable, please contact my rooms before booking.
Immunodeficiency
If you or your doctor are concerned about recurrent or unusual infections, I can help investigate whether an underlying immune deficiency may be contributing. This includes inherited, or primary, immune deficiencies and acquired, or secondary, immune deficiencies.
- Primary immunodeficiency, such as common variable immunodeficiency
- Hypogammaglobulinaemia, meaning low immunoglobulin levels from any cause
- Secondary immunodeficiency, including after chemotherapy or from HIV infection
- Immunoglobulin replacement therapy, including initiation and ongoing management of intravenous or subcutaneous treatment
Immune-related lung disease (ILD)
Some lung conditions are caused or worsened by inflammation from the immune system. I work closely with respiratory physicians to assess these conditions and coordinate treatment.
- Connective tissue disease-associated ILD, including systemic sclerosis, antisynthetase syndrome, and myositis
- Hypersensitivity pneumonitis
- Sarcoidosis with pulmonary involvement
- Other immune-mediated or inflammatory lung diseases
Autoimmune disease
Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues. They can affect several organs and often require care from more than one specialist. I provide immunological assessment and help coordinate diagnosis and treatment.
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
- Sjögren's syndrome
- Systemic sclerosis, also known as scleroderma
- Vasculitis, including ANCA-associated vasculitis and giant cell arteritis
- Mixed connective tissue disease and overlap syndromes
- Other organ-specific and systemic autoimmune conditions
What to expect
Your first appointment will take approximately 60 minutes. I will take a detailed history, perform any relevant testing on the day where possible, and explain my findings and a clear management plan before you leave. Please bring any additional documentation, blood tests, or other investigations to your appointment.
Important: If you are having allergy testing, please stop all oral antihistamines at least four days before your appointment. Antihistamines can interfere with skin-prick tests and lead to falsely negative results. If you are unsure which of your medications are antihistamines, please contact the rooms or check with your GP before your appointment.
